Brother Time

On Tuesday, five days ago, I texted my 11 year old, “How are you?” Ethan is not one for words and often times doesn’t feel a need to express his feelings. Even as a very young child, complaining has never been his thing. His text back “I want to go to Seattle on Friday” immediately caught my attention and I knew he was struggling. Flighting cancer, especially being in Seattle, is extremely expensive with the pricey last minute flights and other added expenses. Regardless, we feel it’s important to bridge the gap between S.L. and Seattle and do all we can to see each other as often as needed. That evening I bought Ethan a plane ticket to arrive in Seattle on Friday to return home on Wednesday. At the time, Ashtyn and I were in the hospital finishing up her antibiotic course with plans to be discharged the day before he was to arrive. Unfortunately the following day her kidney’s started struggling making it necessary to stay in the hospital. On Friday I picked Ethan up at the airport and was back at the hospital for us to eat dinner together. It’s hospital policy that siblings are not allowed to sleep over in the patients room. Each night around midnight, after Ash is settled in for the night, Ethan and I leave to sleep at the Ronald McDonald House and return in time to have late breakfast with her. We keep thinking her health will get to a place where she can be discharged from the hospital but progress seems to be on hold for now. Instead of improving over the weekend she is now in the intensive care unit. My next post will explain more about what got her to the ICU and what the plan is no get her out.

Please pray that her kidney's will function and concentrate properly.
