The Kidney Mystery

At the moment my heart is heavy because Ashtyn’s kidneys have been producing way too much urine everyday for the past 12 days with no clue why and no idea when it will resolve. Being by her side each day has many benefits, one of which is continuity. I know her long and short history, as well as what’s typical and unusual. As I’ve been with her nonstop, I honestly cannot think of any event that would have injured her kidneys. Because of the great care of nurses and doctors, her blood pressures never dropped low enough or long enough to warrant damage, no new medications have been started, BUN and creatinine are slightly high, and her electrolytes and glucose levels have been normal. It just doesn't add up. Day after day she is managed with IV fluids to prevent dehydration as we keep expecting to see some gradual improvement. If there has been progress it’s minimal. I suppose the kidney doctors will have to start thinking more outside the box. Another thing on my mind is her bone marrow aspirate results that are coming back Monday. Cancer free results are a must for her to receive a bone marrow transplant which would give the best chance at destroying the leukemia cells for good. We are hopeful. I’ve also been wondering lately if flying home to visit in the next week or two is a star we maybe shouldn't be shooting for. After May 23rd, the next chance for us to go home is once Ashtyn's recovered enough from her bone marrow transplant, which won't be until September at the earliest. We've been trying to get her home but for four weeks in a row flights have been either canceled or changed. We know we have no choice but to flow with the current of the river so we’ll just see where it takes us. Today I am hoping everyone will tap into their spiritual side, which is in all of us, and whatever way you can petition for blessings. Please fast and pray for Ashtyn that 1. she will have 0.00% leukemia cells Monday. 2. her kidneys will recover. 3. her doctors and healthcare team will be blessed with insight.

Anniversary

It was 6 years ago today Ashtyn was admitted into the hospital and told she had acute undifferentiated leukemia, the rarest form of leukemi...
